UVI Students Attend Accountants' Conference in Atlanta

Dec. 3, 2004 – Eleven students from the UVI Accounting Association St. Thomas campus chapter and two students from the St. Croix campus chapter attended the 25th Annual Southern Region Student Conference of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) held in Atlanta, Ga., in October.
The conference included two days of seminars, workshops and interview sessions. Lectures were made by top leaders in corporate America. Seminars and workshops included "Employment Trends in Accounting," "Balancing Your Career and Personal life," "Corporate Etiquette" and "Financial Planning," according to a UVI release.
"The conference teaches valuable lessons, not only in becoming a business professional, but also in building character," St. Thomas campus Chapter President Avalyn Goodwin said.
"Students learned about the competitive nature of the interviewing process and the importance of having a high grade-point average, preferably above 3.5, because many companies have raised their scales to only employ individuals within this category," she said.
UVI participants had the opportunity to interact with students from universities and colleges across the United States, gaining additional ideas about effectively running a student chapter.
While in Atlanta the participants joined UVI alumni at an alumni reception hosted by UVI President LaVerne Ragster, and Goodwin gave a brief presentation.
Goodwin said that she and the members of the accounting associations are grateful for the opportunity to attend the conference and would like to thank their sponsors and everyone who contributed to make the trip possible. Corporate sponsors included Golden Eagle Financial, LLLP; Margate Management, LP; The Virgin Islands Society of Certified Public Accountants; Lenore Edgecombe, CPA; Ethlyn Tuitt Mill Ali, CPA; Berth Smith & Co.; West Indian Company, Ltd.; AH Riise; Transportation Services, Inc.; Gallows Point Resort; Royal Caribbean; Nailed in Paradise; Lillian's Caribbean Grill; Coral World; St. John Restaurants and UVI.
