Dec. 2, 2004 – Mango Tango Art Gallery begins an exhilarating exhibition this Friday December 3rd from 5:30 to 8:30pm. On view will be the recent mixed-media paintings on canvas of W.B. Thompson, the quilted works of Ann Marie Kissel, and the wood turnings of Holland Van Gores.
W.B. Thompson draws and paints, then overdraws with conte crayon, pencil, acrylic and oil pastel. His themes include allegorical and figurative, architectural and interior views, as well as landscapes and florals. He has developed a signature style of saturated color and random texture.
For artists wondering how to earn gallery representation, Thompson is a good example for them. While he has a few prints, his focus has been an unremitting dedication to creating originals. He works with galleries in San Antonio, Texas, Key West, Florida, and Mango Tango Art Gallery in St. Thomas, and Whim Museum in St. Croix. Gallery owner, Jane Coombes, explains that a variety of gallery representation allows an artist to transcend being a regional artist.
At the opening, in addition to unveiling his new works, many of which tend toward abstraction, Thompson will be signing a new art book just published by his undergraduate alma mater, Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio in Color includes over 80 reproductions of his paintings of the lively city.
Anne Marie Kissel is a lifelong educator and quilter. She moved to St. Thomas 5 years ago. More important than moving furniture to her new home, was shipping in her fabrics. She enjoys working with Indonesian batiks and African prints. She has created exquisite wall hangings, runners, and reversible bowls. She is happy to take commissions. For example, interested clients will be able to order fancy quilts from the wall hanging designs included in the show.
Holland Van Gores has lived in St. Thomas for 25 years. He has worked with wood since childhood. The turning processes fascinates him. He looks for indigenous woods to express himself, which he has superbly done in open vases, lidded vases, bowls, and abstract objects for the exhibition. His compositions showcase the natural patterns in the wood. His wood turnings resonate with a visual serenity and a tactile dynamic. Viewers are encouraged to touch his creations.
