Residents Invited to Fire Prevention Events

Oct. 4 — Fire Prevention week will be observed with various events on St. Thomas and St. John. The first event scheduled was a Monday morning motorcade through Cruz Bay, St. John, followed by one in the afternoon at Coral Bay.
Fire prevention week can be traced back to the great Chicago fire of Oct. 9, 1871. The massive fire that engulfed the city, killed 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2000 acres in 27 hours. On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America sponsored the first National Fire Prevention Day, deciding to observe the anniversary as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. This was expanded to Fire Prevention Week in 1922.
On St. John and St. Thomas, Fire Prevention Week will be celebrated with the following activities.
Tuesday – – 9 a.m. Radio talk show with Sam Topp WVWI.
