Aug. 6, 2004 – St. John's annual Night Out Against Crime celebration will be held on Aug. 25 with the St. John Community Foundation sponsoring a family-oriented Summer Snowflake Dance in Cruz Bay Park from 6 to 9 p.m.
"The kids are going to create snowmen," Carole DeSenne, foundation executive director, said. The group hopes to come up with a way to make snowballs, she added.
DeSenne said the youth members of the Night Out planning committee came up with the theme and are making snowflake and snowman decorations. The youths are La'Neisha Abraham, Gemma Ashly, Kalani Ashly, Maria Cecilia Burkett, Sinead Burkett and Zandra Ferguson.
The Summer Snowflake Dance will feature music by the Ah We Band and refreshments including cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones and fresh fruit.
For last year's observance, DeSenne said, community businesses and residents donated 125 items including television sets to be raffled off. She expects a similar largesse this year, with all of the items youth oriented.
Police Department personnel will be on hand to meet the young people and their families who attend the event – and give out snowflake flashlights, jewelry items and teddy bears.
Night Out Against Crime events are scheduled throughout the nation during August. They focus on drug, crime and violence prevention awareness; support local anti-crime efforts; and aim to bring communities together to send a message to criminals that crime and drugs will not be tolerated.
The National Association of Town Watch founded Night Out 21 years ago as an annual occasion for community members to reclaim their streets from criminals and to promote police-community partnerships. The designated date for this year was Aug. 3, but observances are being held throughout the month across the nation. For more information, visit the Town Watch Web site.
Locally, residents are asked to leave the front entrance lights at their homes on from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 25 to show support for the Night Out Against Crime efforts.
