June 12, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands will receive a donation of $25,000 from V.I. Rum Industries Ltd., the makers of Cruzan Rum, on Tuesday, June 15, at an 11 a.m. presentation at the Cruzan Rum headquarters on St. Croix. Donald C. Nelthropp, president of V.I. Rum, will present UVI President LaVerne E. Ragster with the donation to support scholarships at UVI.
Since 1987, V.I. Rum has made annual contributions to the university. With the presentation on Tuesday, V.I. Rum will have contributed more than $400,000 to UVI.
"Cruzan Rum is once again pleased to be making this contribution to the University of the Virgin Islands that will enable our students to obtain a quality college education right here in the Virgin Islands," says Marvin Pickering, senior vice president and chief financial officer for V.I. Rum.
A press release said Pickering is a proud graduate of UVI's class of 1985.
He said, "This is the 18th year that we are making this investment, which in total amounts to more than $400,000 and is exclusive of our endowment to the Knud Oliver Parns scholarship fund."
