May 13, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:

Proposal Development Workshop Planned May 14 on St. Thomas, St. Croix
A proposal development workshop is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 14, at UVI. The featured speaker, Akbar "Allen" Aghajanian-Saba, is a consultant for National Institutes of Health Minority Biomedical Research Support and
Support of Continuous Research Excellence programs. He will address developing proposals for research support, academic development and building infrastructure capacity. The workshop will be videoconferenced between Room 101 in the Teacher Education Building on the St. Thomas campus and Room 713 of the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and refreshments will be served.
The workshop is appropriate for all persons interested in proposal development and grant writing. It is sponsored by the MBRS and SCORE. For more information and to pre-register, contact Marilyn Henderson at Ext. 1380 or by e-mail.
St. Croix Campus to Host Reading Campaign Conference on May 15
UVI's St. Croix Campus will host the 2nd Annual Reading Campaign Conference presented by the V.I. Education Department's Division of Curriculum, Assessment and Technology, St. Croix District, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15. The opening session will be held in the cafetorium, with workshops to be held in various classrooms and exhibits on the library's terrace.
The conference will include workshops to assist parents and teachers in understanding reading scores and results of diagnostic assessment. Conference sponsors such as Houghton Mifflin Publishing and the St. Croix Library Association will present exhibits of quality books for children and young adults and book sales at bargain prices to encourage summer reading.

St. Thomas Class of 2004 Spring Ball Scheduled May 15
The St. Thomas campus graduating class of 2004 will hold its spring ball — "A Night of Sheer Elegance" — at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, at the Westin Hotel on St. John. The ball is sponsored by the class' social and cultural committee and the UVI alumni affairs office. Tickets are $40 and are available from graduating class members, the student affairs office and from Dockside Bookshop in Havensight Mall. For more information call 776-9200, Ext. 2672 or 693-1046.
STARfest Held Over for Encore Performance on May 16
An encore performance of STARfest 10 will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 16. STARfest is a variety-styled show produced annually by the UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts. Performances on May 8 and 9 were sold out. As an added bonus, persons with tickets to STARfest 10 on Sunday be invited to the STARfest cast "after party" featuring Xtaushun Band, the Crucian Festival Road March Champs. Upward Bound Slates Youth Role Model Luncheon on May 16
The Parents Association of UVI's Upward Bound college preparation program on the St. Thomas campus will host the 14th Annual Youth Role Model Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Resort. Youth role model honorees are: Keli Chongasing of All Saints School, Cara Lee Williams of Antilles School, Jevauhn Jones of Charlotte Amalie High School, Shatel Francis of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, Jamie Steffens of Sts. Peter and Paul High School, Keridon Williams of Seventh-Day Adventist School, Kharina John of Wesleyan Academy and Angela Gumbs of the Upward Bound Program. Tickets are $35 and are available from honorees and at the Upward Bound office, Room 100 H of the Classroom Administration Building, on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
St. Croix Class of 2004 Student Regalia Available at Bookstore
The UVI St. Croix campus bookstore has announced that regalia for students in the graduating class of 2004 is now available. Students can pick up their regalia from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Monday, May 17.
UVI Spring Semester 2004 Classes Ended; Commencement Set May 22-23
Spring semester 2004 classes officially ended on Sunday, May 9. The deadline for instructors to submit grades is 10 a.m. Monday, May 17. UVI's 40th annual commencement ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, May 22, and Sunday May 23, on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses respectively. Summer session registration is scheduled for Thursday, June 10, and Friday, June 11. Summer session will begin Monday, June 14.
UVI Employee Service Awards Photos Posted on Home Page
The complete lists of UVI employees honored during this spring's Employee Service Awards Programs on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses have been posted on the UVI Web site's Current Events page. Included are selections of photographs from the ceremonies, including those of St. Croix employee of the year Mr. Arthur Joseph and St. Thomas employee of the year Dr. Henry Smith. Student Awards Program Booklets Available at UVI Home Page
The program booklets from recent UVI student awards programs are now available on the UVI home page. Included are the 30th Annual Awards Program from the St. Croix event which was held on April 24, and the 40th Annual St. Thomas campus Academic Awards Program which was held on May 6.
UVI Nursing Workshop to Feature Author and Educator on May 27
The Nursing Education Division on the UVI St. Croix campus will host a two-day workshop for educators that will focus on cultural diversity among students and working with disadvantaged students. The workshop is geared toward UVI faculty and other teaching professionals and will be held in building Q, Room 100, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 27. UVI Extends Deadline for Admissions Applications Until May 30
UVI has announced the extension of the deadline for the submission of applications for admissions through Sunday, May 30.
All interested persons are encouraged to apply. Individuals are asked to submit a completed admissions packet to the university's admissions office promptly. This packet should include the following:
1. a UVI admissions application;
2. an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or official GED verification;
3. an official GCE, CXC or CAPE results, if applicable;
4. an official SAT or ACT results, for undergraduate applicants, or GMAT results for potential MBA and MPA graduate applicants; and
5. a $25 (US) check or money order.

UVI-CELL Adds Common Sense Investing Course on St. Croix
A course titled Common Sense Investing for V.I. Residents offered on St. Croix is the latest addition to the offerings of UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center. CELL courses are designed for individuals seeking new careers and professional advancement, or those who want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities.
The new course stresses a common sense approach to investing. It covers understanding how to manage personal finances in order to confidently mak
e educated decisions. The instructors will be Michael J. Kelleher and Christopher E. Margolin of UBS Financial Services. Topics will include: financial management overview, retirement plan structures and strategies, stock and bond market advanced techniques, tax strategies and estate planning.
The course will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 2 through July 7. The fee is $99. Classes will be held in Room 143 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. For more information call 693-1100, send e-mail or visit the CELL Web site.
