Conservation and Development Group Holding Workshop

May 12, 2004 – The V.I. Resource Conservation and Development Council is sponsoring a two-day "Capacity Building Training Workshop" for council members and invited guests on Thursday and Friday at the Tamarind Reef Hotel.
Council members volunteer their services throughout the 50 states and U.S. territories. Local councils identify, address and set out to meet the challenges of sustaining and improving the quality of life in their own communities.
The mission of the V.I. council is to enhance the quality of life for Virgin Islanders "through the conservation of natural and cultural resources and the stimulation of growth and development," according to a release. Council member volunteers are representatives of government agencies, community organizations and businesses, as well as private citizens.
At the St. Croix workshop, representatives of the National Association of RC&Ds will present information on council fundamentals, member roles and responsibilities, council development and strategic planning, and public relations.
"The objective of this training seminar is to develop the leadership skills of our council members and strengthen the V.I. RC&D program," May Adams Cornwall, local council president, said. The council's 2004 goals are to broaden its membership base and increase its visibility in the community, she said.
Since its incorporation in 1990, the V.I. council has carried out more than 174 projects relating to resource conservation, pollution prevention, grant-writing, sustainable agriculture, leadership development, ecotourism and education. The projects have resulted in the infusion of more than $2.4 million into the V.I. economy, the release stated.
