May 8, 2004 – Kathleen Turbe, Ulla Muller Elementary School sixth-grade teacher, died last summer, but she will be remembered this Friday.
She, reportedly, always encouraged her students to participate in science and math fairs. Her classes were major contributors.
The St. Thomas/St. John School District 2004 Student Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fair, held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center, is dedicated to her.
Public and nonpublic schools will display student projects in the following categories; Mathematics and Engineering: Real World Problem Investigation, Abstract Problem Investigation and Real World Model or Demonstration; Science: Experiments/Research or Demonstrations; and Technology: Multimedia, Individual Web Page Design, School Web Page Design, Graphics/Publishing or Programming.
The elementary schools are divided into two levels – Kindergarten through third grade and grades fourth through sixth. Each elementary school will provide two entries for each category.
Junior High and senior high schools will submit four entries in each category. Judges include business people, parents and officials from the V.I. Department of Education. Trophies will be awarded to the winning projects in each category.
Ludence Romney, Gerald Walters and Renaldo Wheatley, district math, science and technology coordinators, in a recent press release, urged the public to attend the event.
