May 9, 2004 – This year's Virgin Islands recipients of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Quality Award will be honored at a ceremony on Wednesday at the Frederick D. Dorsch Cultural Activity Center in Frederiksted.
The recipients, who were announced in April, are the Environmental Rangers, a St. Thomas group serving youth; and Ann Marie Gibbs, a science and math teacher at Education Complex High School. (See "Teacher, youth program receive EPA awards".)
Both honorees were cited for their accomplishments in improving the environment in their communities at a ceremony on April 23 in the EPA's Region 2 offices in New York.. "By taking a leadership role and making local changes, the award recipients demonstrate that we can all have a positive impact on the environment," regional administrator Jane M. Kenny said then, describing both the youth program and Gibbs as "trail blazers."
The Planning and Natural Resources Department is hosting Wednesday's local recognition ceremony, set for 10:30 a.m.
At the gathering, according to a DPNR release, EPA officials "will present plaques to the Virgin Islands winners" and also "announce the recipient of a grant from the agency for development of the St. Croix Information Management and Outreach Initiative program."
