JULIA STILES STARS IN 'THE PRINCE AND ME'

April 11, 2004 – Can a Wisconsin farm girl become a Danish princess? Of course, silly. This is the movies; specifically, "The Prince and Me."
Paige Morgan (Julia Stiles) is a free-spirited but serious pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin, steadfastly focused on her studies, as she observes her less academically-inclined girlfriends settling for marriage. Humph, "not for me," thinks Morgan.
Then, of course, something happens. That's what makes stories. Eddie (Luke Mably) née Danish Prince Edvard, enrolls at the university where he becomes Paige's chemistry partner, an arrangement repugnant to Paige, who has no use for his macho behavior.
On top of that, he winds up working at the same school hangout where Paige works. Well, before you know it, she has invited him home to the farm for Thanksgiving where, according to one reviewer, "his studly facade falls away, until all that remains is his British acccent." He charms the family, going so far as to win a power mower derby. Now, what young lass could overlook that kind of accomplishment?
As in all prince-and-commoner stories, the jig is finally up when Paige learns Eddie's true identity and later meets his frosty parents – Queen Rosalind (Miranda Richardson) and King Haraald (James Fox) — who take a very dim view of the farm girl. Nonetheless, Paige follows her prince to Denmark, and her fate is left in the hands of the three writers who cooked up the story.
Cautionary note: Always think twice about going to see a movie written by three different screenwriters.
However, if you're worn out after scooting all over for those pesky Easter eggs, this is probably about as good a way to unwind as any.
"The Prince and Me" runs 1:51, is directed by Martha Coolidge and is rated PG for some sex-related material and language.
The film is currently playing at Sunny Isle.
