March 30, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued March 29 has these announcements:

UVI Humanities Festival Continuing through April 3
UVI is celebrating literature, music, oral traditions and all of the disciplines that encompass the humanities at the Humanities Festival 2004 through April 3. The week of events will focus on the theme "Word Power Sound: Caribbean Cultural Connections." The festival — with most events taking place on UVI's St. Croix campus — is featuring presentations by renowned Caribbean writers, musicians and filmmakers, and a presentation by a popular comedian and social commentator. UVI to Offer English Proficiency Exam April 15; Sign-up Deadline is April 2
UVI will offer the English Proficiency Examination — a graduation requirement — on both campuses at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 15. The registration deadline is April 2. To register on St. Thomas visit the enrollment office on the second floor of the Classroom Administration Building. For more information on St. Thomas call 693-1152. To register on St. Croix visit the Academic Services office located in Evans Center Room 811. For more information on St. Croix call
692-4103. Walk-ins are not accepted. St. Thomas test locations will be announced. On St. Croix the test will be administered in Evans Center rooms 302 and 305.
Intramural Basketball Playoff and Championship Games Scheduled
UVI Intramural basketball season playoff games on the St. Thomas campus were scheduled for Monday, March 29. A championship game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31. All games are played in the Sports and Fitness Center. Admission is free. For details on St. Thomas contact Erik Heikkila at 693-1213. On St. Croix, the men's and women's intramural championship games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. April 2. For details on St. Croix contact Bruce Wray at 692-4139.
St. Thomas Campus Career Exploration Day, Health Fair Set April 2
UVI's 25th annual St. Thomas campus Career Exploration Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 2, in the Sports and Fitness Center. UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. The goal is to motivate students to actively plan for their professional futures. The day will include a panel discussion from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring UVI alumni and others from the education, banking and finance, law, and hotel/tourism industries. A presentation on the job market in the Virgin Islands will be made by V.I. Commissioner of Labor Cecil Benjamin. Part two of the day will focus on careers available in the community service sector. Concurrently, a health fair will be operated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. offering blood-pressure, blood-sugar, blood cholesterol screening, HIV testing and visual-acuity screening. UVI Day at Sunny Isle Mall Planned April 3
UVI will conduct a "UVI Day" at the Sunny Isle Mall on St. Croix on Saturday, April 3. UVI Day is designed to showcase program offerings at the university, highlight special initiatives, alert students and their parents as well as potential graduate students and adult learners to UVI application procedures and deadlines and expose the public to members of staff and faculty.
St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Chapter Slates April 3 Walk-A-Thon
The UVI Alumni Affairs Office has announced the St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Chapter will conduct a walk-a-thon at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, from the Wendy's restaurant at Mandela Circle to Brewers Bay on the St. Thomas campus. For more information, contact the alumni affairs office at 693-1047. Participants' fee is $15. It entitles walkers to a UVI alumni t-shirt, a water bottle en route and a light breakfast at Brewers Bay Beach. Sign-up is 5:30 a.m. and the walk follows immediately. Funds raised will go toward scholarships offered by the chapter.
Seminar on Grant Writing Basics Set by SBDC-St. Thomas
A seminar on grant writing basics will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 8, on St. Thomas. Titled "Grant Writing Basics: Funding Sources Identification and Proposal Development," the seminar will be presented by Diana Demers, director of the UVI office of sponsored programs. Pre-registration is required. Admission to the seminar is $20. A $5 discount is offered to individuals who pre-register by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6. The seminar is free for UVI faculty, staff and students, but they must pre-register. The session will take place at the SBDC training facility at Nisky Center. UVI April 4 Seminar to Highlight Recent Changes in the CPA Exam
A seminar designed to highlight changes in the recently updated CPA exam will be offered by the UVI Business Division at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, in the Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus. Roy D. Jackson, CPA, will be the featured speaker. The free seminar is open to current UVI students as well as the general public. Participants Sought for UVI's 2004 Carnival Floupe
Participants are being sought for UVI's 2004 Carnival floupe. UVI's community engagement committee, which organizes the parade entry, has chosen the theme: "Knowledge, Culture and More for Carnival 2004." A look at the planned costumes is available on the UVI Web site. Please call Cherie Wheatley at 693-1541.

* 7 -10 p.m. — Dominoes & Pool at the Family Billiards & Sports Lounge
* Saturday, April 3 — Fun Night
* 6 p.m. — Co-ed volleyball, Pictionary, Scrabble and other games
* 8 p.m. — Faculty/staff vs. UVI Bucs men's basketball team
* Sunday, April 4
* 2 p.m. — Co-ed flag football
UVI Scholarship Application Deadline is April 2
UVI scholarship applications for the 2004-05 school year are now available for high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Applications can be obtained at the financial aid offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Applications and the required letter of recommendation are to be returned to the UVI-financial aid office no later than the scholarship deadline which is 4 p.m. Friday, April 2. UVI Little Theatre Offers Spring Production April 16-19
The UVI Little Theatre Production for the spring semester will be "The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail." Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, this historical yet believably current play is about the night Thoreau was thrown in jail in 1846 for non-payments of taxes. The play will feature members of the community as well as UVI students. Show dates are April 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2004. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students. The UVI Little Theatre is located in the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. Call 693-1354 for details.
