UVI JAZZ ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM WITH FAMOUS BASSIST

The UVI Music Department will present a spring concert by the UVI Jazz Ensemble featuring bassist extraordinaire Larry Ridley. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, March 27 at 8 p.m. in UVI’s New Dining Pavilion.
Mr. Ridley has performed with such jazz luminaries as Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Sonny Stitt and many more.
He was inducted into the Down Beat Magazine Jazz Education Hall of Fame, The International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame and was given the "Living Legacy Jazz Award" by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. Presently he is the executive director of the African American Jazz Caucus.
The Music Area will also be presenting Mr. Ridley at a free clinic on Thursday, March 25 at 12:30 p.m. in the Choir Room of the UVI Music Suite.
Also featured on the program is vocalist/pianist Ms. Vashti Hooker, who will be performing such jazz favorites as "Misty," "My Funny Valentine" and "I’ll Take Romance."
The UVI Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Martin Lamkin, has been exploring several compositions from the Count Basie Band, such as "C.B. Express," "Blues in Hoss Flat," and "The Booze Brothers." Another tune featuring the ensemble will be Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You."
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available from the UVI Humanities Division, the Music Area, UVI Bookstore and Ensemble Members. For further information contact Martin Lamkin at 693-1194.
