FIRE-RELATED OUTAGES KEEP WAPA CREWS BUSY

March 11, 2004 – As of Thursday afternoon, all of the sections of St. Croix served by Feeder 2 that experienced power outages earlier in the day due to fires had been restored to service except for Seven Hills, the Water and Power Authority announced.
Work in that area was expected to be completed by nightfall, WAPA said in a release.
"The outages resulted from utility pole fires that started near the Cotton Valley fire station, Turner Hole, Estate Seven Hills and Altoona Lagoon," the release stated. "The outages left the majority of customers from Estate Cotton Valley to the Great Pond and Mount Washington area without electrical service from just before 6 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m."
Utility line crews spent the day replacing insulators and poles burned by the fires.
On Friday, the release said, crews will resume work initiated earlier this week to replace insulators on the northwestern side of St. Croix in the Estate Butler Bay and Hamm's Bluff areas that have been damaged by the accumulation of salt from recent high seas and winds. The unusual buildup of salt residue has caused insulators to overheat, split and short out.
"The authority is working to normalize service to all affected areas as quickly as possible," the release stated.
