Feb. 12, 2004 – World-class cricket was back on St. Thomas Thursday with the start of Carib Beer Cup Series play at the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School cricket ground featuring the leading team, Barbados, with 60 points, vs. Leewards Islands, with 16 points.
Barbados won the toss and elected to bat first on a perfect wicket. The wicket, or pitch as it is called at Cancryn ground, is known to produce plenty of runs because of the hard surface.
Barbados opened with Sherwin Campbell and Kurt Wilkerson, and the Leewards opened the bowling with Adam Sandford and Kerry Jeremy. Barbados started slowly and when the score was 48, they lost their first wicket of Wilkerson caught Tucket bowled Brown for19 runs.
In the meantime, Campbell batted until close of play for a well-played 162 not out. It was his first big score of the Carib Cup series.
Barbados lost 6 more wickets and at the close of the first day was 356 for 7 losing Hinds l.b.w. to Hodge for 49 runs, Reiffer was caught Jeffers bowled Jeremy for 27, Smith did not last long as he was bowled by Hodge for 1, Mayers l.b.w. to Cornwall for 20, Brown was run out for 29, Hurley made a fiery 21 before he was caught for 21 off Jeremy, Bradshaw is not out on 8 and Campbell is not on a well-played 162.
Barbados with 356 for 7 wickets was poised for a very big score as the match resumed at 10 a.m. Friday on the Cancryn cricket ground.
Play is continuing through Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. daily. The Round 6 series in the Carib Cup competition is being hosted by the St. Thomas Cricket Association.
Taking part in the series elsewhere are the national teams of Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies "B" and Windward Islands.
