Volunteers Needed for Annual Alumni Phonathon
UVI's annual Alumni Phonathon is scheduled for Sept. 22 through 26. It will be conducted on the St. Thomas campus from the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Each evening of the Phonathon, volunteers will place calls to the UVI's alumni to solicit financial support for the UVI Annual Fund. Calls will be placed between 5:30 and 9 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help place calls, stuff envelopes and provide other assistance. Organizer Jacqueline Sprauve, supervisor of alumni affairs, promises volunteers will have a good time. Refreshments will be served. Sign up today by calling Sprauve at 693-1046 or Sybil Farrington at 693-1047.
SBDC Offers Seminar on "World Class Customer Service" Sept. 18
A small business seminar entitled "Delivering World Class Customer Service" will be presented by the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the SBDC Training Facility, Nisky Center, Suite 720, on St. Thomas. Presenters Jackie C. Adonis and Dianne J. Bynoe will discuss attitude, customer expectations, face-to-face and telephone service, challenging interactions and "going above and beyond."
Admission is $20. A $5 discount is available to those who pre-register by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17. Admission for UVI faculty, staff and students is free, but they must pre-register. For details call 776-3206.
Real Estate Salesperson's Course Begins on St. Thomas Sept. 20
Residents of St. Thomas and St. John can learn more about real estate through a five-week course offered by UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit beginning Sept. 20. The Real Estate Salesperson's course will prepare individuals to sit for the Real Estate Salesperson's Licensing Exam or introduce individuals to a career in real estate. It will also help participants become more knowledgeable property owners, buyers and sellers. Marilyn Blackhall, an experienced realtor who works with ReMax/St. Thomas, will be the instructor.
The course fee of $450 covers 38 hours of instruction, manuals and registration. An early-bird discount of $25 is available if paid by Sept. 12. There are no prerequisites for the course. For details, contact UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit at 693-1100 or by e-mail.
Computer Skills Courses Offered on St. Thomas, St. John
Two sessions of International Computer Driving License (ICDL) computer skills course will be offered to residents of St. Thomas and St. John this fall by UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit. The popular course provides computer training in seven areas including basic information technology concepts, managing files, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and using the Web and e-mail.
Courses begin the week of Oct. 6. Individuals can select from the following course schedules:
— Mondays/Wednesdays 4-7 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.-noon
— Tuesdays/Thursdays 6-9 p.m. and Saturdays 1-4 p.m.
The ICDL certification program is recognized in more than 100 countries as the international standard for computer literacy by employers, educational institutions and government agencies. Individuals can choose between a complete, seven-module course for $595 or a four module ICDL "Start Program" for $395.

Open House, Tour of UVI's Sheep Research Facility Scheduled Sept. 25
UVI's Animal Science Program will conduct an open house at the Agricultural Experiment Station on St. Croix from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. Included will be a tour of the sheep research facility, viewing of the hair sheep flock, reviews of current animal research and the results of student projects. Articles Sought for 2004 Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair Booklet
The board of the V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair is soliciting articles of interest to the V.I. community for publication in the 2004 V.I. Agrifest bulletin. This year's fair theme is "Agriculture: An open door for 2004." The deadline for submission of articles is Friday, Oct. 15.
Articles may be submitted to Kofi Boateng, executive vice president of the board; Errol Chichester of the V.I. Agriculture Department; or Faye Reed at the office of the Commissioner of Agriculture.
