SMITH BAY ROAD TO GET TEMPORARY SPEED HUMPS

Feb. 5, 2003 – The Public Works Department will soon install two temporary "speed humps" on Smith Bay Road just east of the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort.
Speed humps are wider and flatter than speed bumps. While the prudent motorist will slow down to a creep before passing over them, they do not require drivers to come to a near full-stop as speed bumps do.
Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood said in a release that the humps are being installed as a temporarily measure to deal with a blind spot along Smith Bay Road where a number of accidents have occurred.
A Public Works employee who did not wish to be named said the problem arises when eastbound drivers stop to make turns into driveways. "There's a blind spot there," he said.
Callwood said advisory signs will be erected to warn motorists approaching the speed humps, which he said eventually will be replaced once authorities come up with a permanent solution to the visibility problem.
