Oct. 2, 2002 – The sewage problem that recently plagued Golden Rock Road is fixed, Planning and Natural Resource Commission Dean Plaskett said Wednesday in a press release.
The Public Works Department "has completed its work in the area, successfully replacing the sewage lines that were the cause of the discharge," Plaskett said. "As a result, the pools of sewage that had been adversely impacting motorists and residents in properties adjacent to the road have been removed or dissipated."
He said that environmental and health concerns in the area were addressed and that the area is now considered safe.
Plaskett had sent out an advisory in mid-September warning the public to stay away from the area. (See enter text to display and click on hereSEA official: Sewage line collapse a catastrophe .) No one at the Planning and Natural Resources Department on St. Croix responded to a message requesting more information. The problem was centered directly in front of Sugar Beach Condominiums.
Last week, a huge pool of sewage flooded the area across the street. The road was closed while repairs were made.
The problem appeared to be two-fold. Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood several weeks ago said the cause was a blocked manhole at Harbor View Apartments that was the property of the apartment complex.
However, the St. Croix Environmental Association's executive director, Bill Turner, said the problem stemmed from a collapsed sewer line in front of Sugar Beach Condominiums.
