HERITAGE TRAIL RECEIVES $12K GRANT

The American Express Company has awarded a $12,000 grant to the St. Croix Landmarks Society in support of the production of the St. Croix Heritage Trail brochure and map.
The contribution was made through the company’s cultural heritage philanthropic program.
In presenting the check to Heritage Trail Coordinator Nancy Buckingham, local AmEx representative Mary Simpson of Southerland American Express, said, "This is an excellent example of how our private sector travel partners can help St. Croix develop its tourism product."
The brochure incorporates archival and contemporary photos, artwork and text covering such topics as history; music; dance and masquerade; island food; bird life and lore; and natural sites and protected areas.
A detailed and artistic map graphically locates sugarmills, greathouses, historic churches, natural areas, overlooks and more.
"It’s going to be a beautiful and user-friendly brochure," Buckingham said,
It is anticipated that the brochure will be published by Feb. 1. Closely concurrent with that date will be the placement of historical marker road signs along the Heritage Trail route between Frederiksted and Pt. Udall.
The St. Croix Heritage Trail, recently named one of 50 National Millennium Legacy Trails, is a project of the St. Croix Landmarks Society and the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism. For more information, call 713-8563.
