A group consisting of marina operators, consultants and publishers from Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia are meeting on St. Thomas this weekend. They are members of the Boating Facilities Committee of the International Council of Marine Industry Association.
This is the first trip to the Caribbean for the group, according to a release from the Tourism Department.
ICOMIA is based in London and is the umbrella organization of 25 national recreational marine equipment manufacturing associations around the world.
Tourism is sponsoring a dinner to welcome the group on Saturday night. According to acting Tourism Commissioner Monique Sibilly-Hodge, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull is slated to speak at the dinner to be held at Herve Restaurant on Government Hill.
The committee is meeting this weekend to discuss the association's Fourth Annual International Marina Conference to be held in Sydney, Australia in 2002.
"I am encouraging the committee members to look at the U.S. Virgin Islands as a site for one of its future conferences. We have one of the best boating destination in the world," said Hodge.
