NEW PRIZE OFFERED BY 'THE CARIBBEAN WRITER'

"The Caribbean Writer" announces that Sonya Hough of Sonya's Ltd., a handmade jewelry store in Christiansted, St. Croix, has agreed to support a new literary prize named in honor of her late husband. This annual anthology of creative writing is sponsored by the University of the Virgin Islands, with editorial staff offices located on the St. Croix campus. The new prize is the largest cash amount offered by "The Caribbean Writer." The $500 annual prize, The David Hough Literary Prize, will go to the author of a poem, short story or drama published in "The Caribbean Writer" who is a resident of the Caribbean. "This prize was designed to encourage those writers based in the region," Dr. Erika Waters, the editor, said "Many Caribbean writers live elsewhere, but those who live here often have a harder time at getting their work published." "The Caribbean Writer" awards four other prizes. Since contributors are not paid, such prizes are a major impetus, according to Dr. Waters.
"The Caribbean Writer" is currently accepting submissions for the upcoming Volume 14 issue, due out in June 2000. Submit poems (5 maximum), short stories (2 maximum not to exceed 15 pages each), personal essays on the Caribbean (maximum length is 3500 words or 10 pages), and one-act plays. Only previously unpublished work will be accepted. (If self-published, please give details.)
When submitting work, please put name, address, and title of manuscript on a separate sheet. Put the title only on manuscript. Include brief biographical information and mention previous publications, if any. All manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced.
Special Sections for the next Volume include:
1. Topics on the millennium
2. Work on or about Derek Walcott and Kamau Brathwaite in celebration of their 70th birthdays next year.
Manuscripts will not be returned unless accompanied by a postage paid envelope. Authors of accepted work will be notified. Submissions should be mailed to:
