TRANSFER STATION CLOSED; TRASH TRUCKERS TOLD TO TAKE BARGE

The Public Works Department announced the closing of the Susanaberg trash transfer station Friday afternoon due to equipment malfunction and directed garbage haulers to take their truckloads of trash to St. Thomas.
The transfer station "will be closed for repairs until further notice," a release from Public Works stated. "All garbage haulers are asked to barge their loads to the St. Thomas Bovoni Landfill."
Included in the release was a message directed to contractors and other businesses: "It is illegal to use public trash bins or bin sites to deposit construction waste and bulk waste," it noted. Also, the release said, "it is unlawful for anyone to trespass on the transfer station property or to deposit garbage outside the transfer station gate."
Police will be monitoring the island's bin and transfer sites, and any violators apprehended will be subject to a fine of $1,000 per occurrence, the release stated.
The release, issued over the signature of Public Works assistant commissioner Wayne D. Callwood, said the department will advise the public when the equipment problem has been resolved.
