Police have arrested a 40-year-old man and his 28-year-old wife on charges of first-degree rape and child neglect, respectively, in connection with the rape of an 8-year-old girl.
The male suspect, who is the victim's stepfather, and his wife, who is the mother
of the child, were arrested Tuesday afternoon, according to Police Chief Jose Garcia.
Garcia said the child was examined at Roy L. Schneider Hospital where doctors confirmed that she showed signs of sexual molestation.
Further examination by other medical experts are pending, according to the release from Garcia's office.
The male suspect is being held on $500,000 bail and the mother on $5,000 bail.
The stepfather is charged with raping the child on 10 separate occasions in two weeks, according to Wednesday's Daily News. The mother is charged with failing to report nine of the assaults. The paper said the child has been placed in the Human Service Department's custody.
The media are not reporting the couple's names to protect the child's identify.
