FRIENDS OF THE PARK OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS

April 15, 2002 – The Friends of the V.I. National Park group is offering two $1,000 scholarships for marine biology majors or students majoring in biology with an emphasis on environmental studies.
"It's to promote study in fields related to natural resources management and protection," Friends president Joe Kessler said.
The goal is to give local college students the skills needed to get jobs with the park.
The deadline to apply is April 26.
To qualify, students must be entering their junior year at the University of the Virgin Islands, must be Virgin Islands residents who graduated from high school in the Virgin Islands, maintained a B average through the first three semesters at UVI, and completed the prerequisite coursework at UVI for marine biology or biology majors.
The scholarship recipients will also be offered internships with the Friends group during the summers before their junior and senior years.
Applications are available at UVI's financial aid office or from the Friends of the Park office at Mongoose Junction shopping center in St. John. Write to the Friends for an application at Box 811, St. John, V.I. 00831.
Call development director Kim Lyons at 779-4940 for more information.
