BROWNIE STREET -- was renamed on Friday in honor of legendary broadcaster Irvin "Brownie" Brown. Brown is seen here, surrounded by three of his six children and St. Thomas-St. John District Senator Dwayne DeGraff.
DeGraff sponsored Bill No. 32-0146 to rename General Gade, from Veteran's Drive to Sike Gade, as Irvin "Brownie" Brown Sr. Street. Gov. Kenneth Mapp signed it into law in July.
Gade is the Danish word for street. That's how long General Gade's been around in the Savan neighborhood, one of St. Thomas' oldest communities.
Brownie was born and grew up there, among friends and family. A lot like the folks who showed up at the club house for the Retired Police Organization to celebrate the occasion.
For 50 years, Brown has shared Latin, soca and gospel music over the airwaves at WSTA-AM on weekday afternoons. He has emceed countlesss live Carnival events, parades. He trained under former Senate President Bingley Richardson to become a licensed boat captain. Conducted taxi tours as a businessman.
He was also a drummer for Milo and the Kings and toured the U.S. with the band in his younger days. And Brown served as master of ceremonied for the Annaberg Black History Month Fair on St. John.
De Graff thanked the different groups that worked together to stage the event.
