Mapp Picks New V.I. Port Authority Nominee

Gov. Kenneth Mapp nominated Laurel Hewitt-Sewer last week to the V.I. Port Authority Board of Governors as a representative of St. John, according to Government House.

Mapp nominated Sewer on Friday to replace Shaquan Hill of Cruz Bay, St. John, who Mapp nominated in March. Hill withdrew his nomination due to potential conflicts of interest, according to Government House.

“I would like to thank Mr. Hill for considering a position on the Virgin Islands Port Authority Board of Governors. I understand his concerns and therefore I am withdrawing his nomination. I was pleased, however, that Ms. Laurel Hewitt Sewer has accepted the appointment and has agreed to represent the island of St. John on the board,” Mapp said in a statement.

Hewitt-Sewer has been a part-time professor in the University of the Virgin Islands School of Education on St. Thomas since 2000. From 1986 through 2011, she taught family and consumer sciences at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School. She has a master’s degree in child and youth care administration from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a bachelor’s degree in home economics and child development from Georgia Southern University; and an associate’s degree in hotel administration from UVI.
