Monday’s Government House press conference highlighted new housing initiatives aimed at helping Virgin Islanders secure homes and prepare for the ongoing hurricane season, with Communications Director Richard Motta announcing a partnership with Sen. Marise James to provide $15,000 in grants at closing for 20 residents purchasing homes in Williams Delight.
So far, the program has already helped 20 new homeowners, he said.
Motta also shared details about the V.I. Slice Moderate Income Homeownership program, which offers up to $200,000 in gap financing for qualified first-time homeowners. Additionally, financing is available for residents who want to build homes on land they already own. Both programs are funded through the Federal Government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Daryl Jaschen, director of the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency, opened the briefing with crucial information about the hurricane season. Historically, September has brought the most dangerous storms to the territory, and the peak of the season will continue until Oct. 15. Jaschen emphasized that even though only Tropical Storm Ernesto has affected the islands so far, with near-hurricane force winds, residents should remain vigilant.
“Now is the time to assess what we’ve learned from past storms,” Jaschen said. “Reinforce your homes, check for vulnerabilities, and make sure you’re stocked up on essentials.” He stressed the importance of having enough batteries, medical supplies, and canned food to last through November, as 98 percent of the territory’s building supplies and provisions are imported, meaning any storm could delay shipments.
Jaschen also pointed out that advancements in weather forecasting have made predictions more reliable, but residents should still prepare for the unexpected. According to the latest forecast, Tropical Depression Gordon is expected to track north next week, but the director urged residents to remain prepared for any potential impact.
“Storms are unpredictable, and while we’ve been fortunate so far, it’s essential we don’t let our guard down,” Jaschen concluded, reminding everyone that the worst of the season may still lie ahead.
