St. Thomas Man Arrested on Fraud and Theft Charges

A St. Thomas man wanted for fraud and theft turned himself into authorities on Tuesday,” the V.I. Police Department reported.

On Aug. 14, 2023, detectives from the Economic Crime Unit initiated an investigation into Abraham E. Carty for drawing and delivering worthless checks, grand larceny and obtaining money by false pretense. The investigation revealed that Carty wrote a $25,500 check to the complainant on a closed account. The check was a repayment for money that the complainant loaned to Carty, according to the police report.

On Oct. 11, 2023, detectives from the Economic Crime Unit initiated an investigation into Carty for obtaining money by false pretense and grand larceny. The investigation revealed that Carty received and cashed a $1500 check as a down payment for repairs to the complainant’s residence. After cashing the check Carty never returned to the complainant’s residence to complete the repairs, the police report stated.

On Feb. 16, an arrest warrant was issued for Abraham E. Carty’s arrest, the report stated.

On Tuesday, at about 10:25 a.m., Carty, 58 turned himself in at the Richard Callwood Command. Carty was placed under arrest and charged with drawing and delivering
worthless checks, two counts of obtaining money by false pretense and two counts of grand larceny, police said.
