Traffic Stop Leads to Illegal Firearm Discovery

During a traffic stop, St. Coix police officers arrested a man after discovering an unlicensed firearm under the seat of the man’s vehicle, the V.I. Police Department reported.

On Friday, while VIPD was on patrol in the Peter’s Rest area in the vicinity of Carlos Bar and Restaurant, a red Lexus vehicle was observed being operated with an expired registration sticker displayed on the front windshield. A traffic stop was conducted, including a complete vehicle check, when a firearm was discovered under the driver’s seat of the vehicle, according to the police report.

The occupant of the vehicle, identified as Zachary Rene, was asked if he had a V.I. firearm license to possess the firearm under his driver’s seat, to which he replied, “No,” the police report stated.

Rene, 23, was arrested for carrying of a firearm openly or concealed and possession or sale of ammunition. His bail was set at $50,000 pending his advice of rights hearing, the report stated.
