Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued the following statement on the passing of Antonio “Toni” Martinez:

“It was with sincere regret and sadness that I learned of the recent, untimely passing of Antonio ‘Toni’ Martinez.

“As a committed member of the American Legion, Toni was a pillar of the St. Croix veterans community. He was well-known for his selflessness, often volunteering for numerous veterans-related activities all year-round.

“As a member of Myron G. Danielson Post 85, Toni was well-involved in its operation. However, his service went beyond that of Post 85, as Toni was well-known to volunteer at other Posts. His service was not only limited to the Posts. For example, he would place flags on as many St. Croix veterans’ graves as he could find on each and every Memorial Day.

“A true unsung hero, one could always count on Toni to be ready and available in the service of his fellow veterans. His life was not only a reminder of the importance of caring for our veterans, but a lesson on the importance of volunteerism to help those in need.

“On behalf of First Lady Yolanda Bryan, my family, and the people of the Virgin Islands, I express my sincere condolences to Mrs. Alden Martinez, his children, and the rest of Toni’s family during their time of bereavement.

“I would like to conclude with a comforting reminder from Psalm 34:18 – ‘The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.’”
