A low pressure system located 533 miles to the east of St. Thomas at 8 a.m. Sunday is expected to bring bad weather and possibly a tropical depression to the territory starting Monday afternoon, said National Weather Service meteorologist Odalys Martinez in San Juan.
Martinez made her prediction just after the 8 a.m. Sunday update from the National Hurricane Center.
“This is a rainfall event,” she said, adding that winds will be gusty.
It is moving westward toward the Virgin Islands at 10 to 15 mph.
The system got better organized earlier Sunday. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for a tropical depression to form.
Hurricane Hunter aircraft are expected to investigate the low pressure system Sunday afternoon. Martinez said the flight will give forecasters a better picture of what’s going on with it and what to expect in the next few days.
She said Sunday should bring typical weather with a few passing showers to the area.
“But on Monday conditions will start to deteriorate and during the evening the frequency of showers will start to increase,” she said.
She urged residents to continue to monitor the weather.
