Cancelations, Postponements Due to Weather

Here are announced cancellations, postponements, early dismissals and other actions of community interest taken due to the approach of Tropical Storm Isaac. This posting is being updated continually as information becomes available.

Territorywide Interest:

The University of the Virgin Islands plans to operate under normal conditions during the approach and aftermath of Isaac. Classes are taking place on a regular schedule. Classes are scheduled to take place Thursday on St. Thomas, St. Croix and at the St. John Academic Center. Faculty, staff and students are reminded to monitor announcements on the UVI Emergency Hotlines (693-1016 on St. Thomas and 692-4168 on St. Croix,) stay tuned to local radio stations, and to access the UVI website’s home page for further updates.

The U.S. Coast Guard implemented Port Condition ZULU at 8 p.m. Wednesday, for the all sea ports in the U.S. VIrgin Islands, officially suspending operations and closing ports to incoming and outgoing vessel traffic until otherwise directed by the captain of the port.


Scotiabank offices on St. Croix and St. John will be closed all day Thursday. The bank’s offices on St. Thomas will be open during normal business hours.

FirstBank and First Express anticipate the following hours of operations:

— All St. Croix branches will be closed until Friday;

— The location in Cruz Bay, St. John, will remain closed until further assessment;

— All locations in St. Thomas are scheduled to resume normal business hours Thursday; and

— All locations in the British Virgin Islands are scheduled to resume normal business hours on Thurrsday.

The Virgin Islands Next Generation Network board of directors’ meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday has been cancelled until further notice.

A meeting of the V.I. Senate’s Committee on Planning and Environmental Protection, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Frits E. Lawaetz Legislative Conference Room on St. Croix, has been cancelled.

Senior Citizen recreation centers will be closed territorywide on Thursday. The centers on St. Croix will remain closed on Friday, but the centers on St. Thomas and St. John will re-open at 8 a.m.

Transportation:

American Airlines canceled today’s midday flight from St. Croix to Miami. It is also:

— Operating its Miami-to-St. Thomas flight, arriving at 1:35pm and departing at 3 p.m.

–Operating its Miami-to-St. Thomas flight AA1819, arriving at 8:00pm. This is the scheduled daily over-nighter.

American Eagle is:

— Operating its San Juan-to-St. Thomas flight, arriving at 6 pm. and departing at 6:30 p.m.

— As of Thursday morning American Eagle had not canceled its San Juan-to-St. Croix flight scheduled to arrive at 6:30 p.m.

LIAT resumed operations at Cyril King Airport with its midday flight, scheduled to arrive at St. Thomas at 12:45 p.m. and depart at 1:30 p.m.

Jet Blue

— Operating as normal with no cancellations.

Delta:

— Operating its flight from Atlanta to St. Thomas with scheduled arrival at 2:08 p.m., scheduled departure at 2:58 p.m.

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority:

St. Croix District: The Transfer Station and scrap metal area at the landfill will be closed Thursday. The facilities will re-open at 6 a.m. Friday. All administrative offices and facilities will be closed Thursday and will re-open at 8 a.m. Friday.

St. Thomas/St. John District: The Bovoni Landfill and the Susannaberg Transfer Station will operate regular business hours on Thursday. All administrative offices and facilities will operate regular business hours Thursday.

Solid Waste Guidelines: All residents are asked to refrain from disposing of household waste at the bin sites until after the passage of Tropical Storm Isaac to decrease any overflow that may occur. There will be no house-to-house collection on St. Croix on Thursday and residents are asked to secure their waste receptacles until after the passage of the storm.

St Croix:

Delegate Donna Christensen’s St. Croix office in Sunshine Mall, Frederiksted, will be closed Thursday. Calls to the St. Croix office will be forwarded to the St. Thomas District Office, which will be open Thursday.

Frederiksted Health Care Inc. will be closed Thursday morning. The health center anticipates reopening at noon or later in the afternoon if the weather permits. This immediate reopening will facilitate the process of the Health Center providing immediate health care to patients who are in need. FHC encourages all clients to secure their medications and medical documents and have them readily available in the event an evacuation is needed.

The St. Croix Chapter of the American Federation of Teachers has cancelled two ratification meetings scheduled for Wednesday and Friday evenings. New meeting times will be announced.

Government workers on St. Croix will be told to stay home Thursday because of the storm.

The St. Croix District Board of Elections has postponed a public forum scheduled Wednesday evening at the St. Croix Educational Complex. Further information is available by calling 1-340-773-1021.

The U.S. National Park Service has closed its siteson St. Croix in anticipation of the approaching storm. Buck Island Reef National Monument, the Christiansted National Historic Site, and Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve are all closed until further notice. Additional information is available by calling the Superintendent’s Office at 1-340-773-1460 or visiting the park website at www.nps.gov/sari.

The Family Assistance Program on St. Croix will suspend services on Thursday. Clients are asked to contact the office today to reschedule appointments. Christiansted: 773-2323/692-9871 Frederiksted: 772-0085/772-9591.

The Meals on Wheels program will not deliver meals Thursday as clients received double meals Wednesday. Family members and caregivers of those who receive services through the program are asked to ensure their needs are met on Thursday.

The St. Croix office of the Government Employees’ Retirement System will be closed Thursdaydue to tropical storm Isaac. The St. Thomas office will operate under its regularly scheduled hours.

St. Thomas:

The Early Childhood Advisory Committee has postponed a meeting scheduled to take place Thursday at The Family Connection on St. Thomas. The meeting will now be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at The Family Connection Center at Tutu Park Mall. The committee will review the draft of the annual Strategic Report.

A ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Department of Planning and Natural Resources to sign a memorandum of agreement between DPNR and the St. Thomas Historical Trust has been postponed until further notice. The agreement lays out requirements and responsibilities for the restoration of the Garrison House and Fort Willoughby historic sites on Hassel Island and the Fort Christian Museum in downtown Charlotte Amalie.

The Reichhold Center for the Arts has postponed its Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event scheduled for Thursday. The event is re-scheduled for 5:30 p.m. August 30 in the Reichhold theater.
