St. Croix Junior High Students Begin Junior University

Male students in the 7th grade set out Monday to take classes at the first Junior University in the school district located at the University of the Virgin Islands campus. Titled “Males with Promise,” the five week academic learning and enrichment program is designed to serve a maximum of 50 male students who will attend academic courses in English, mathematics and language arts, and a vocational course in carpentry. Students were selected from all three junior high public schools on St. Croix for the joint project of the Department of Education and UVI.
Junior University in the school district is conducted through the Safe Schools’ CHOICES program, managed by Rene Hansen. “There is a critical need for improvement of social and literary skills in the school district, particularly in enhanced mathematical, and reading/language arts skills among seventh grade male students,” said Hansen. “The summer program will positively impact students and instill in them the need to achieve in their academic and social environments while providing mentoring and counseling through successful role models and promoting a future that involves college and meaningful careers.”
Space is available for a few more students. Male students in the 7th grade interested in taking enrichment classes at St. Croix 2012 Junior University should contact Hansen today at 773-1095, ext. 7057 to register.
