Veteran hurler Geronimo Newton pitched a shutout against the Cobras on Sunday in the Rafael Jackson AA Baseball league to lead the 40 Plus Hurricanes to a 5-0 victory at the D.C. Canegata ballpark.
Newton, having arguably the best pickoff move in the league, demonstrated why he is considered as such by picking off five Cobras runners at first base. Jeffrey Bryan, the Cobras’ starter, also pitched well but gave up the occasional walk which came back to haunt him beginning in the fourth.
Bryan was locked in a scoreless pitching duel with Newton through the first three innings but got into trouble when he walked the bases loaded in the top of the fourth. Eustace Davis then delivered an infield single to score the first run of the game for the Hurricanes.
It turned out to be the only run Newton would need as, backed up by stellar defensive play, he mesmerized the youthful Cobras with his assortments of pitches and pickoff moves.
The Hurricanes finished with five runs on four hits and three errors while the Cobras finished with five hits.
Newton picked up the complete game victory and Bryan got the loss for the Cobras.
Top batters for the Hurricanes were Davis and Raymond Cintron (1 for 2 with one RBI), and Real Sackey and Carmelo Torres were both 1 for 2. For the Cobras, Jose Martinez Jr. was 2 for 3.
