Student Will Be Signing Her ‘Art Thursday’ Scholarship Poster

Whitly Charles with her posterWhitly Charles, a St. Croix Educational Complex student, will be signing her poster design from 6-8 p.m. on Art Thursday, Dec. 17, at Danica Art Gallery, located in the Apothecary Hall courtyard in Christiansted. The poster benefits the Art Thursday Scholarship Fund. Whitly’s artwork entitled “Day And Night” was chosen last summer to for this project.

She is a 17-year-old senior and student of artist John Jones. Her interest in art began at an early age. Charles was enrolled in Advanced Placement classes during her junior year at the Educational Complex, and she was a volunteer at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Last summer, she went to Savannah College of Art and Design for a one-week program on an art scholarship from the St. Croix Foundation.
The Art Thursday group has established a scholarship fund to assist the next generation of artists. It will assist one high school senior who plans to pursue an art education at a higher level. The group of galleries and fine jewelers that host the Art Thursday nights in Christiansted are reaching out to the greater St. Croix community with the scholarship fund.
In 2010, the scholarship will be open to all public, private and parochial high school seniors on St. Croix. The scholarship award is based on a combination of artistic skill and academic achievement.
The poster is available at other participating galleries such as Art @ Top Hat, Crucian Gold, D&D Studio, Designworks, The Goldworker, ib designs, Maria Henle Studio, Maufé Gallery, SAKARI, Watch Your Step Art Studio and Yellow House Gallery.
