Brief: Gov. DeJongh Opens Lindqvist Beach to Public Use

April 3, 2007 — Gov. John deJongh Jr. has authorized acting Attorney General Vincent Frazer to transfer control of the recently acquired Lindqvist beach property to the Department of Housing, Parks, and Recreation. According to a Government House release issued Tuesday, the beach is to be immediately open to the general public.
"It is necessary that we protect the area top the best of our ability so that it remains in good condition … now and for generations to come," deJongh said.
The release states: "Lindquist Beach has been the subject of much discussion in recent years. Several development issues have been a concern to residents and environmental organizations throughout the territory. As a response to those concerns, the property was purchased by the V.I. government in 2005 for a total of $8.9 million, which included a legislative appropriation for $4.5 million. The purchase was finalized on Nov. 16, 2006."
"Keeping the beach closed is simply not an option. My administration will not deny the public use of a beach that has brought pleasure to so many for decades," said deJongh. He added, "I support the eventual transfer of this beach to the Magens Bay Authority, which will allow it to be operated similarly to Magens Bay. But until funding is provided to make this happen, we must allow public access to the beach," deJongh said.
