April 12, 2007 — Henry Haid rose to prominence portraying piano man Billy Joel in the hit Broadway musical "Movin' Out," but a St. Thomas guitar player knew him back in the day.
"Henry and I put together my band on St. Thomas called the Sun Kings years ago," said Steve Richman. "We have been friends for a long time. He used to come down every year or two."
That was 10 years ago. This weekend, the old friends come together for a couple of weekend performances at Jacks at Tillett Gardens. "It is a Billy Joel tribute show," Richman said. "He's bringing some of his players, and the band will also include some members of the Sun Kings."
Haid also brought his Joel act to Jack's in April 2006. The restaurant's website says Haid "turned Jack's into Madison Square Garden."
Since their formation in 1997, the Sun Kings have gigged steadily, playing "everything from Merle Haggard to Jimi Hendrix," Richman said. The trio also features Jake Adams on drums and Paul Dirks on bass. Haid, meanwhile, found a niche performing the songs of fellow Long Island native Billy Joel. In addition to his work in "Movin' Out," a show choreographed by Twyla Tharp, Haid now tours with a tribute band named after one of Joel's albums, Glass Houses.
The tribute show at Jack's will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $20 per person, or $15 per person for parties of six or more. Dinner is available and will be served until 10 p.m. The bar will stay open throughout the performance. For reservations or more information, call Jack's at 776-9464.
