Arson Attempt at St. Croix Legislature Unsuccessful

Oct. 16, 2007 — St. Croix Fire Services is investigating an attempted arson Tuesday at the St. Croix Legislature building.
Firefighters responded to a 2:30 p.m. call of a smoky fire, which was contained and did not cause any damage.
“It was definitely arson … it is a crime” said Fire Chief Steve Brow when contacted Tuesday evening.
Brow said he was attending a VITEMA meeting at the time of the incident. He received a full report from Corporal N. Velaz, who reported to the scene. Brow said the fire was set in a spare room which had a staircase leading to the roof. Office dividers were stored in the room.
“Someone threw a paper that was lit inside the room,” Brow said. The office dividers were non-combustible and the fire died, he said.
Senate Minority Leader Ronald Russell called the incident “unfortunate.”
“Given the fact that something like that could happen, despite having security, calls for a serious investigation,” he said, speaking from St. Thomas, where he earlier attended a Senate Rules Committee meeting.
Fire Prevention and the V.I. Police are following up on the attempted arson, Brow said.
