Jan. 2, 2008 — As part of its annual Winter Learning Vacations series at Maho Bay Camps on St. John, the Rhinebeck, N.Y.-based Omega Institute will hold three free workshops for area residents.
This is Omega's 24th year at Maho. Viki Brown, who is organizing the St. John activities, said people should come to get acquainted with internationally famous speakers.
"And to get in touch with personal self-awareness, to understand new methods of healing themselves and to gain holistic insight," she said.
The free workshops will be held SolYoga, located to the left of Mongoose Junction Shopping Center's rear parking lot on St. John. All run 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Additionally, Omega will discount the Winter Learning Vacation prices for V.I. residents. Each class runs $35, or residents may pay $80 per day or $400 per week.
The free workshops kick off Jan. 14 with Jon Kabat-Zinn the featured speaker. He uses mindfulness-based stress reduction based on his renowned program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is the author of numerous books including his latest, Coming to Your Senses, which discusses meditation, body scanning and Hatha yoga.
On Jan. 21, Alanna Kaivalya will explore the Jivamukti Yoga system, with a focus on Nada Yoga. The workshop includes chanting.
Jan. 28 is the date for Ann Lindsay to demonstrate holistic painting. Lindsay is an award-winning artist and teacher and author of Watercolor: A New Beginning: A Holistic Approach to Painting.
In addition to Kabat-Zinn, Kaivalya and Lindsay, the Winter Learning Vacations feature other interesting speakers, Brown said.
During the week of Jan. 15 through 18, Kabat-Zinn will serve as a featured speaker. Additionally, Naushon Kabat-Zinn will demonstrate Vinyasa Yoga. Pamela Wilson will give a presentation called, "Enlightenment is Here Already: Now Let's Clarify the Jewel, the Body and the Mind." David Wegman will focuses on artistic expression by reimaging the image. Omega co-founder Dr. Stephan Rechtschaffen talks about "Living Fully in this Moment." Steven Michael Pague, who serves as co-director for the Winter Learning Vacations, will present "Explorations into the Natural Mysteries of Our World."
The week of Jan. 20 through 25, Kaivalya, Rechtschaffen and Pague are featured speakers. And Daniel and Tara Bennett-Goleman will speak about "Emotional Alchemy." They have written best-selling books that explore transformation of emotional confusion to lead to a more genuine connection with others. Natalie Goldberg guides those at the seminar through a chronological pronouncement of the facts of our lives. Annette Knopp will hold sessions about "The Free Heart," for those who feel that something is missing.
The Winter Learning Vacations series wrap up the week of Jan. 27 through Feb. 1 with Lindsay, Knopp, Rechtschaffen, and Pague as a featured speakers. Additionally, John Perkins, the author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, will discuss his book. It demonstrates how to achieve personal and global peace and prosperity by expanding consciousness and shapeshifing our institutions. Margot Anand will explore ancient methods of sexual alchemy, energy transmutations and ways to cultivate spiritual awakening. She is the author of The Art of Sexual Ecstasy.
The final schedule for the Winter Learning Vacations is not yet set, but will be posted at Connections on St. John and Red Hook Mail Services on St. Thomas, Brown said. She suggests that people email her
