Feb. 25, 2008 — The Antilles High School sailing team has won the Caribbean Region Qualifier for the Mallory Cup.
The team rallied in the last four sets of the regatta Saturday to turn a five-point deficit into a one-point victory on St. Croix. The final race decided the regatta, as Country Day School and the Antilles School were tied on points after 15 races. Country Day's B skipper led Tyler Rice and Zan Schmidt all the way around the racecourse until committing a foul as the boats approached the finish line. As Country Day did their penalty turns, the Antilles sailors crossed the line first, securing a win and earning the qualifying spot for the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (SAISA) qualifying regatta in Jacksonville, Fla., set for April 5-6.
In A division for Antilles were Olin Davis and William Bailey, who placed second with 16 points after eight races, and sailing B division for the Antilles School were Tyler Rice, Nick Schmidt (races 1 and 2), and Zan Schmidt (races 3-8). They were able to win their division with nine points after eight races, winning seven out of the eight races sailed.
