Dear Source:
I am always amazed when new people move to the Virgin Islands to buy property and/or purchase homes that they don't have a clue nor do they seem to care about the "natural" Flora and Fauna that has existed on the islands and the property prior to their purchase and habitation. They plant non-indigenous plants that are a tasty treat for our iguana friends and put in pools for relaxation. Many iguanas swim! They like to cool off too! Get a pool cover!
Maybe, some of the plants in their yard are like chocolate ice cream to the iguanas. Who could resist? Yes, I have them too! I enjoy watching them climb and eat the flowers. I pick up the babies that find their way into my house up off the floors and screens and put them back outside. The fluorescent green of the babies is a delight! I shoo the bigger ones out with a broom. I have the privilege of having the responsibility of 4 dogs. They are not allowed to chase/eat iguanas. I own a pressure washer and do not allow trees to overhang my roof. While iguanas have not yet pooped on my truck, I can attest to the toxicity of roaming chicken, rooster and peacock excrement. At least the very least, iguanas are quiet!!!
The Mongoose population has been down for the last few years so possibly that has caused what some may consider overpopulation. I feed the hummingbirds, bananaquits and several other native birds. I have a baby tortoise that a Thrush dropped on my deck soon after it hatched. I have hawks perch on the trees in front of my home. Where have all the deer gone? I believe we should look at the opportunity that we have to care for all of God's creatures.
