May 27, 2008 — Inmates at the Alva Allen Swan Bureau of Corrections Annex graduated Tuesday from a special program designed to teach anger management and conflict-resolution skills that will help them solve disagreements and other "contentious" issues, according to a Department of Justice news release.
The six-week program, called the Second Chance Inmate Program, is headed by Nancy P. Lewis. Her non-profit organization, NPL Communications, also sponsored the program. Eight of the 11 graduates went through the program twice and will now go on to mentor future inmates that volunteer for the program, said Sara Lezama, spokeswoman for the Justice Department.
"Through this program, the inmates receive skills they can leave the prison with and utilize on the outside so they don't end up back in prison," Lezama said Tuesday.
Lewis is seeking to expand the program by including relaxation and meditation techniques such as yoga, bead therapy and jewelry design, along with math and literacy courses.
