April 30, 2007 – The Department of Health's Emergency Medical Services will offer the EMT-Basic course in the St. Thomas-St. John district beginning May 14, according to a press release from DOH.
Residents interested in becoming a certified emergency medical technician (EMT) should pick up an application at the EMS office on St. Thomas at the Schneider Regional Medical Center.
There is a $25 application fee to cover cost of materials, class size is limited, and applicants must undergo prior screening.
The minimum requirements for applicants are as follows:
§ Must be 18 and older
§ Complete the training application; pay a $25 application fee
§ Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Applicants who do not
have a college degree will be required to complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) reading and math skills test.
§ Have a V.I. driver's license
§ No prior convictions
§ No physical or mental disability that will prevent applicant from performing EMT-basic functional tasks.
Also, prior to beginning the class, applicants must have an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR course and show proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or sign a waiver.
