St. Thomas/Water Island Administrator James A, O'Bryan Jr., Chairman of Gov. Charles W. Turnbull's Abandoned Vehicle and Beautification Task Force has released the list of last identified owners of 63 vehicles confiscated from the streets and neighborhoods of St. Thomas since the task force resumed the removal of abandoned vehicles on May 1. These cars were removed in various operations from: Anna's Retreat, Cassi Hill, Smith Bay, Nadir, Garden Street, Hospital Ground, Content, Lindbcrg Bay, Sub Base, Roy Lester Schneider Hospital parking lot and Goat Street.According to law, the last registered owners of these vehicles have 1 5 days after public notice is given to reclaim the vehicles by paying $250 at the Department of Property and Procurement to reclaim these vehicles from the government's compound at Bovoni. After that period, the vehicles will be disposed of in accordance with law. The government reserves the right to files charges for abandoning of vehicles which comes with a potential fine of $1, 000 per vehicle.O'Bryan recently announced plans to begin charging persons who abandon vehicles under another provision of the Virgin Islands Code which provided for up to a $5,000 fine and up to six months imprisonment.'The law is clear, the last registered owner of these vehicles are to be held accountable for these cars once they are found abandoned and there will be an across the board application of the law to enable the government to recover the very expensive cost of removing and disposal of these cars.
