July 10, 2006 – A shooting incident at the Paul M. Pearson Gardens on Sunday morning has left one St. Thomas resident dead, according to Police spokeswoman Shawna Richards.
When contacted Monday, Richards said the victim, 34-year-old Germaine Heyliger, died at Schneider Regional Medical Center at approximately 4:52 p.m. Sunday afternoon of multiple gunshot wounds.
She said police responded to reports of a shooting in the area around 7:58 a.m. Sunday. "When the officers arrived, the victim was conscious and able to provide them with some information," Richards said.
"He said that he was waiting for some friends when a black jeep pulled up and shots were fired." However, Richards said "he was unable to provide police with a description of a possible suspect."
Richards said Heyliger was transferred via ambulance to the hospital where he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.
"We had originally classified the incident as assault in the first degree," Richards said. "But now, since the victim has died, we are classifying it as a homicide."
Heyliger was a resident of Estate Bovoni.
