Little League Season Opens with Wins by Angels, Reds and Yankees

Feb. 10, 2007 — The Elmo Plaskett East Little League opened its 2007 season Saturday with three games, two of them close.
If opening day was any indication, it will be an exciting season, with fans and parents once again filling the stands and lining the outfield fence, cheering boisterously for the young women and men. Attendance has been on the decline in recent years, but showed some resurgence late last year. Here's hoping that Saturday’s showing is a continuation of that resurgence.
Game 1 (10-12 division)
Angels 12, Dodgers 6
In the opening game, Carlos Uribe pitched a four-hitter to power the Angels to a 12-6 win over the Dodgers. D’Andre Simmonds got the loss for the Dodgers. Leading hitters for the Angels were Evanston Matthews Jr., 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Selvin Gonzalez, 2 for 3 with two RBIs. For the Dodgers, Simmonds went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Game 2 (7-9 division)
Reds 11, Suns 8
In game two, the Reds managed to pull out the 11-8 win despite getting outhit by the Suns 7 to 5. Jason Redlinger picked up the win on the mound for the Reds, while Akido Lindquist took the loss for the Suns. Top batters for the Reds were Sergio Santiago, 2 for 3 with two RBIs, with Redlinger helping his own cause by going 1 for 2 with two RBIs. For the Suns, Amante Todman and Jahkiedo Joseph were both 2 for 3 with one RBI each.
Game 3 (10-12 division)
Yankees 6, Suns 4
The final game of the day saw another outstanding pitching performance by the Yankees Leroy Simmonds Jr. He limited the Suns to just three hits in leading his team to a 6 to 4 victory. Ashante Lawrence got the loss for the Suns. Lakish Plante supplied most of the offense for the Yankees, going 2 for 4 with a grand slam home run and four RBIs. Teammate Ray Parrilla chipped in by going 2 for 4 with one RBI. For the Suns, Naybo Gonzales went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, while D’John Hardy went 1 for 1 with one RBI.
