May 13, 2002 – This is National Police Week, and the V.I. Police Department is observing it throughout the territory with a variety of special events and programs.
St. Croix
Saturday's kickoff activity, starting at 5:30 a.m., was a "fitness walk" from headquarters to the Frederiksted pool.
Sunday featured worship at 10 a.m. in the Pavilion at Patrick Sweeney Headquarters, and bowling at 7 p.m. in Tropical Ten Pins.
Monday featured an open house from noon at the Marshall Command and a pig roast in the Pavilion beginning at 6 p.m.
Tuesday's events are an open house from noon at the Francis Command and softball from 7 p.m. at the Terrence Martin Ballpark in Frederiksted.
On Wednesday, which is Peace Officers Day, there will be a parade starting at 9 a.m. from the Marshall Command to the Christiansted Bandstand.
For Thursday, Senior Citizens Day will be observed at 10 a.m. and there will be karaoke and more from 8 p.m. at the 2 + 2 Nightclub with Blimpie.
Friday will bring the observance of "Civilian Day" starting at noon with a variety show at the drive-in starting at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, an awards ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in the Pavilion.
The finale event, on Sunday from 10 a.m., is a beach party at the Frederiksted pool.
St. Thomas-St. John
Things got started on Saturday with a Law Enforcement Firearms Tournament in the morning at the Bovoni shooting range and bowling at the Bovoni Bowling Alley in the evening.
For Sunday, there was worship at the Assembly of God Church in Contant followed by a Mother's Day luncheon at Walker's By The Sea restaurant in Lindbergh Bay.
On Monday the public was invited to a daylong "open house" at Zone A Command (Richard N. Callwood Zone) on the St. Thomas waterfront and Zone D Command (Leander Jurgen Command) in Cruz Bay. "Civilian Day" was observed at noon, and a Fun and Frolic program got under way at 6 p.m. at Emile Griffith Ballpark.
On tap for Tuesday are a parade beginning at 9 a.m. from Rothschild Francis "Market" Square to Emancipation Garden, where a bazaar will set up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Wednesday is Peace Officers Day. At 5:30 a.m. there will be a candlelight procession and worship service at Frenchtown Evangelical Church with the placing of wreaths on officers' graves in Western Cemetery. Then, at 7:30 p.m., the Kon Tiki will depart the waterfront for a harbor cruise with music by P'Your Passion. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the boat. On the agenda for Thursday is an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. in the courtyard of the Alexander A. Farrelly Criminal Justice Complex.
Friday brings a King and Queen Pageant in the new Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School auditorium, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Ticket outlets are both Modern Music stores, International Records and Tapes, and the office of the Police commissioner.
The big attraction on Saturday is annual Retirement Ball at Victor's New Hideout. It gets under way at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person and $50 per couple.
The week ends on Sunday with a family picnic from 9 a.m. until at Magens Bay beach, Shed No. 2.
