Jan. 24, 2003 – Eddie Donoghue, who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor on Alicia "Chucky" Hansen's ticket last fall, will deliver the annual St. Patrick's Day lecture at the University of the West Indies School of Continuing Studies in Montserrat.
"I consider it an honor," said Donoghue, a long-time St. Thomas resident who was born in Montserrat and has been active over the years in the local Montserratian community.
The lecture is part of a weeklong series of event that ends on March 17, St. Patrick's Day, which Montserrat celebrates in style because of its historic connection to Ireland.
Donoghue will speak March 11 on "Masquerade: Cultural Preservation in the Modern World," which was the subject of a paper he gave two years ago at a conference in St. Thomas.
He said that masquerade traditions have changed from their native Africa to the point that women now participate. "And they wear a crown instead of a paper hat," he said.
Donoghue said he will leave on March 8 for Antigua to participate in a book signing for his recent publication "Black Women/White Men: Sexual Exploration of Female Slaves in the Danish West Indies." From Antigua, he'll head to Montserrat for the lecture and another book signing. He'll then fly from Montserrat to St. Croix on March 14 to serve as the grand marshal in the island's St. Patrick's Day Parade, to be held on March 15.
