NEW 25TH LEGISLATURE: SAME AS OLD 24TH

Dear Source,
I believe that the 25th Legislature has a unique opportunity to make some fundamental changes to improve our Legislature. One of the things that should be foremost on the agenda should be a code of ethics for that body. Another is the fair treatment of all elected representatives of the people.
Do I believe the members of the majority caucus are capable of instituting such far-reaching reforms? My answer is yes. What I am not sure of is existence of the will to make meaningful reforms, not only to the first branch of government but also to the election system, among other reforms needed.
I also would hope that in the organization of the Legislature all members of the 25th Legislature will be given an opportunity to chair a committee or a sub-committee. I believe for efficiency there should be sub-committees. Some committees that I definitely feel should have sub-committees are: the Government Operations Committee, the Committee on Economic Development, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Committee on Finance, Committee on Labor and Veterans Affairs, and Committee on Youth and Human Services.
In case the obvious advantages of these sub-committees are not apparent to all, I would indicate one important factor: the oversight responsibility of the Senate would be better served and all Senators would have definite responsibilities that should keep them busy and out of mischief. I am sure there are other advantages that would become more apparent as it is implemented.
Unfortunately, as the 25th Legislature began its tenure, it has shown thus far more of the same: greed, self-centeredness, arrogance and lack of creativity. It appears that they are unable to think outside of the box. Some of them are engaging in spending the taxpayers' money frivolously before even showing what positive changes they bring to the institution: remodeling offices, securing new equipment — a lot of cosmetics but very little substance. What a disappointment!
Will there be any positive change soon? Who will deliver us?
In a democracy good government is everybody's business; we get out of it what we put in. This bears repeating: in our system of government we get the government we elect, we get what we deserve. Democracy requires participation and vigilance. Are we willing to assume our responsibility as responsible citizens? Are we willing to be involved, to be vigilant, to share our ideas, our time? May God-Allah have mercy on us all as we seek to do His will.
