March 17, 2004 – Starting April 1, residents in Estates Hope, Fortuna, Bon Esperance and Bordeaux — all on St. Thomas' West End — will be able to get their mail in roadside mailboxes.
U.S. Postal Service customers living on the West End currently get their mail in free boxes located at the Post Office.
Postmaster Louis A. Jackson said Wednesday that the boxes will be housed under the West Shanty where the emergency units were previously located.
"There's close to 300 boxes available," he said.
Postal customers will also be able to drop off mail at collection slots located in the nested units.
Residents who want to take advantage of this free service must request mail delivery at the Aubrey C. Ottley Post Office in Sugar Estate. They must bring proof that they live in the area. Boxes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
If residents want to continue getting mail at the island's post offices, they must pay for the box.
Jackson said that all customers who live where there is no mail delivery are entitled to a free box at a post office.
According to Jackson, extending the delivery routes to the West End means that all of St. Thomas now has mail delivery.
