April 29, 2004 – A Virgin Islands serviceman was killed in the line of duty as a result of an accident in Iraq on Wednesday, Government House announced late Thursday afternoon.
Army Staff Sgt. Kendall Thomas was the driver of a truck "which was involved in an accident" in Baghdad, a release stated. "He sustained severe chest and head injuries and died as a result of his wounds on Wednesday."
Thomas was stationed at Fort Hood, Ky.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Thomas, who also is in the Army; and his mother, Edris I. Stephens of Paul M. Pearson Gardens on St. Thomas.
In extending condolences, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull said that Thomas, "like so many Virgin Islands soldiers, died in a faraway place so that others might enjoy the fruits and blessings of freedom. Let us be constantly mindful of the high price that freedom brings."
